Springfield Community Based Doulas (SCBD) aim to reduce infant and maternal mortality by increasing the number doulas, that are informed about evidence-based infant and maternity care. We need more doulas for the birthing families in Springfield, MA: a larger pool of individuals trained to do this work who will be paid for their efforts. SCBD intends to bring professional doula training to Springfield and develop collaborations with individuals and groups working on new models of training and paying doulas. |

Healthy mothers and infants are birthed through community members empowering each other"Springfield Community Based Doulas made it possible for me to find support in areas of being a new mother that I never knew I needed. Now I would like to work with them to help other mothers get the help that they deserve."- Tyrra, 2017 At Springfield Community Based Doulas, we prepare community members in Springfield to be eligible for doula certification. The certification process can present barriers to access for individuals in low-paying jobs. Initial and ongoing costs of certification are challenging, and the learning framework more closely resembles traditional academic models than experiential-based programs of evaluation. Bringing in someone like a Doulas of North America International (DONA) trainer that trains community health workers and is interested in making a hybrid training, is a critical step in the right direction.
